Q: What does “peace” mean?

Biblical Context: In the Bible, “Shalom” is a Hebrew word that signifies much more than the English translation of “peace.” It encompasses a sense of completeness, wholeness, and well-being. It involves not just the absence of conflict but also the presence of positive conditions that lead to fullness of life. “Shalom” is used as a greeting and farewell, implying a blessing of peace upon the other person. It is deeply connected to the idea of reconciliation and harmony with God and others. In the Old Testament, one of the names of God is Yahweh-Shalom, which means “The Lord Our Peace,” and in the New Testament, Jesus is referred to as the Prince of Peace.

Work for Peace

  • Matthew 5:9

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.
